Toyota Opens Second Plant in Karawang, Indonesia
Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announces that
its vehicle production subsidiary in Indonesia, PT. Toyota Motor
Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), held a ceremony here today to mark the
opening of its second plant in the city.
Plant 2 Karawang, adjacent to the existing Plant 1 Karawang, will produce the "Etios Valco"1, a compact hatchback developed specifically for Indonesian consumers.
Guests at the ceremony included Minister of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia H.E. Mohamad S. Hidayat and Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Indonesia Yoshinori Katori. TMC Senior Managing Officer Takahiro Iwase and TMMIN President Masahiro Nonami were also in attendance.
At the ceremony, Iwase said: "Toyota positions Indonesia as an important production base. Proactively increasing our capacity here is proof of Indonesia's growing importance. We also plan to develop Indonesia as an auto export base. TMMIN's Karawang plants have become indispensible to the future growth of global Toyota".
Nonami, speaking of his aspirations for Toyota in Indonesia, said: "The opening of this new plant is the newest chapter in Toyota's commitment to the development of Indonesia." The plant, he said, "incorporates advanced production technology, designed to be both eco-friendly and worker friendly, including many ideas from our Indonesian employees."
Initial production capacity at Plant 2 Karawang is approximately 70,000 units per year. Approximately 3.3 trillion rupiah has been invested and approximately 1,100 new jobs created. With plans to increase production capacity to 120,000 units at the beginning of next year, total annual production—in combination with production at Plant 1 Karawang2—is planned to exceed 250,000 units a year.
Since the founding of the PT. Toyota-Astra Motor sales company in 1971, Toyota has been providing vehicles that have pleased Indonesian consumers.
Last year, the automobile market in Indonesia passed the 1-million-unit mark for the first time, with Toyota sales in the country also exceeding 400,000 units for the first time. Moreover, Indonesia's importance as a production and supply base is growing: a total of 60,000 units of the "Kijang Innova" minivan and the "Fortuner" SUV were exported from TMMIN to ASEAN and Middle Eastern countries last year.
Toyota, based on its founding principle of contributing to society through the manufacture of automobiles, will continue to develop products that satisfy Indonesian consumers while endeavoring to expand the Indonesian automotive industry.

Common Car Maintenance Mistakes
- Car Maintenance is More Than Regular Oil Changes
- There are many people, who think of one thing and one thing only when they hear the words car maintenance service: the oil change. While changing your oil is very important, because dirty or worn out oil can put a lot of stress on your engine and eventually even result in a number of necessary auto repair needs, it is not the only part of regular maintenance. You also need to make sure you check things like your lights, windshield wipers, other fluids, brakes and more. Don’t neglect the rest of your car and focus only on the oil or you could pay the cost down the road in increased auto repair bills at your local auto shop.
- Using The Wrong Motor Oil
- This is a big one. Make sure that you consult your vehicle’s owners manual before you purchase and use any motor oil. Oil is graded by quality and viscosity. Make sure that you get the right kind for you vehicle and for the season.
- Avoiding That Auto Repair
- Here’s a simple tip for you. If you are driving and your ‘check engine light’ comes on, don’t think “Oh, I’m sure it will be fine,” and keep on driving until your car literally breaks down on the highway. Do yourself and your wallet a favor and head to your nearest local auto shop and get a recommendation for any auto repair that your car may need.
- Using The Wrong Octane Fuel
- This can also wreak havoc on your engine. Have you ever noticed that when you are fueling up there is more than one nozzle at each pump? Those numbers above are an indication of the fuel’s octane rating. Some cars, (typically luxury or high-performance vehicles) require a higher octane rating than the cheapest fuel. If you fail to put the correct octane fuel in your vehicle you will quickly be spending a lot more on auto repair than you have saved in going for the cheaper low-octane gas. That said, if your car doesn’t require a higher-octane fuel, go ahead and get the regular, otherwise you will likely be wasting money at the pump.
- Not Getting Brakes Checked Regularly
- This should be a no-brainer. One of the biggest reasons to stop into your local auto shop for a regular car maintenance service and tune-up is to have the brakes checked. If the brake pads are worn and need to be replaced, that is something that you will want to do right away. I’m sure we don’t have to tell you that brakes are somewhat important when driving a car. We all like to go, but if you can’t stop you’ve got big problems.

Toyota i-ROAD Leans its Way into the City!
Toyota's i-ROAD Concept, which debuts at this week's Geneva Motor Show, is adorned with just three wheels, meaning it's just as much a motorcycle as it is a car, and the driver and passenger sit in tandem style instead of side-by-side. This arrangement allows for a very thin 850mm width, which is about the same as a large motorcycle. Because the cockpit is enclosed, the occupants don't need helmets, nor are they open to the elements outside.
Also like a traditional two-wheeler, the i-ROAD tilts through the turns and when driving on uneven surfaces. Toyota says its computer-controlled Active Lean technology automatically balances the vehicle with no input from the driver.
Despite the automaker's expertise in hybrid drive trains, the i-ROAD is a pure electric vehicle, and Toyota says it "believes in the feasibility of EVs to serve as a main mode of transport for short urban journeys." There's a two-kilowatt motor in each front wheel, meaning the i-ROAD offers up just over five horsepower, which isn't a lot but should be enough to get moving up to city traffic speeds (no performance specs are available).
An on-board lithium ion battery allows for a range of around 30 miles, after which the vehicle can be recharged in three hours using "a conventional domestic power supply." We're a little unsure of what Toyota means by that – using a 110-volt outlet or a 220-volt outlet, or perhaps a unique charger? -- but you're welcome to see the press release yourself below, along with a video showing the leaning three-wheeler in action.
