Toyota hybrids get more popular in diesel-loving Europe

Together, Toyota and its Lexus luxury arm broke the 100,000-unit barrier for hybrid vehicle sales in Europe last year, Automotive News Europe reports.

Long known for their diesel-buying preferences as a way to boost fuel economy, Europeans upped their Toyota and Lexus hybrid purchases by a whopping 29 percent in 2012. While the Toyota brand accounted for more than three-quarters of the approximately 109,000 units sold, about 90 percent of Lexus vehicles sold in western Europe last year were hybrids.

While the 29 percent jump is impressive, it pales in comparison to the gains Toyota made in the US last year. The Japanese automaker boosted US alt-fuel sales by 83 percent in 2012 to more than 327,000 units and accounted for about 60 percent of all the hybrids sold Stateside. Lexus accounted for about 38,000 of the hybrids Toyota sold in the US in 2012.

2014 Toyota Tundra Appears with Revised Styling

Toyota has pulled the curtain back on its 2014 Tundra, showing a truck that has gotten its most significant refresh since its launch as a 2007 model. For better or worse, however, the changes that Toyota has made to the full-size pickup are mostly cosmetic, with the underpinnings of the vehicle staying unchanged.

The most obvious revision for 2014 is to the bluff front fascia of the truck. There's a new, taller squared-off grille decorating the Tundra's nose, along with a revised, three-part front bumper design. The optional black grille-frame strikes us as an acquired taste, to say the least, but other models, like the Limited above, is all clad in chrome. Fenders and wheel wells are more square than in the out-going truck, too. Perhaps most significant is the revised bed design, which Toyota calls "all-new," with new sheet metal on the sides, a revised tailgate and a very subtle integrated spoiler.

Inside, Toyota has given buyers some new seats and a new-look instrument panel. A backup camera (always handy on big trucks) is now standard equipment on all grades, as is Bluetooth connectivity. Blind spot monitoring is a new, optional feature as well. In all, as with the exterior mods, the changes in-cabin are far more evolutionary than revolutionary.

All of the oily/functional bits of the Tundra carryover from the existing lineup. A 4.0-liter, 270-horsepower 278-pound-feet of torque V6 is still the base engine, while two V8s – a 310-hp, 327-lb-ft 4.6-liter and a 381-hp, 401-lb-ft 5.7-liter – round out the offerings. The V6 hooks up to a five-speed automatic transmission, while both V8s make use of six gears.

5 Tips to Keep your Vehicle in Top-Notch Condition!

Owner's Manual
Yes, the forces that manufacture these vehicles set down all the rules and instructions in one place. It tells you what all the lights on the instrument cluster mean, how to adjust everything from the air conditioner to the seat angle and what to do when you have a flat tire.
In addition, it spells out in detail what kinds of fluids the machine uses, where to add them and which lights are visible when they are low. Most importantly this book lists what the owner must do to stay within the good graces of the car maker. If your spark plugs are good for 100,000 miles, it's in there, and if you should change your cabin air filter every 15,000 miles, it's in there too.
Although it may seem counter intuitive to a creature of higher intelligence many owners of these earth bound vehicles rarely read this manual, which necessitates the need for my other four important maintenance facts.
Change the oil
The oil change is the building block upon which all auto maintenance is built. Earthlings need to acknowledge that motor oil degrades over time and that they need to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for renewing it. This can take the form of responding to a handwritten sticker attached to the windshield or scheduling an appointment when the oil life monitoring system signals the need for new oil.
The useful by-product of changing the oil religiously is that a trained professional will be under the hood and underbelly of your vehicle and be able to point out significant issues. This assumes that you have chosen a facility with a skilled staff.
Resolve check engine lights promptly
When you think about one system that monitors all the emission and many of the performance functions of your car and signals when something is amiss, you realize the sophistication of today's vehicles. Unfortunately many people ignore the presence of a check engine light and the results can be costly.
One in ten of the cars on the road are being driven with the check engine light on and half of these have been untreated for three months. These vehicles risk damage to expensive parts like the catalytic converter or as in the case of an evaporative leak, the vehicle could be leaking fuel or fuel vapors into the atmosphere.
Start out with a decent vehicle
Sometimes the worst day in your relationship with a vehicle is the day you bought it. Since the degree of deceit involved in used car sales is beyond belief, the need for a knowledgeable person to evaluate a potential purchase is a prerequisite. A low purchase price should be viewed with extreme caution rather than as an opportunity.
There are many vehicles that are being sold that may never be registered. These include cars that have title issues and those that have been flooded or salvaged. People seeking a decent vehicle at a fair price fall victim to unscrupulous sellers that either entice buyers with lowball prices or mask serious defects. Buyer be aware!
Keep good records
There is much more money to be saved from knowing what has been done to your car as there is from shopping for a bargain. Knowing your car's repair history enables you to ask the right questions when services are suggested. For example, you should know when your timing belt, spark plugs and specific fluids were renewed.
How old your battery is and if the tires are due to be rotated are other bits of information that may cost you money if your mind is a blank. Don't accept the shops suggestions without checking your own records.
While I am not holding my breath for an other-worldly being to ask for this information, I would hope that it can serve as a way to avoid an auto maintenance melt down right here on earth.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America Receives $464,425 Contribution from Toyota Financial Services, ADESA, Manheim and Norwalk Auto Auctions

Toyota Financial Services (TFS) has partnered with three auto remarketing firms, ADESA (www.adesa.com), Manheim (www.manheim.com) and Norwalk Auto Auctions (www.norwalkautoauction.com) to provide a donation of $464,425 to Boys & Girls Clubs of America that will be divided equally among 19 local Boys & Girls Clubs currently running Diplomas to Degrees (d2D), the organization’s college readiness program.

Launched in 2012, d2D is a partnership between Toyota and Boys & Girls Clubs of America that provides tools, resources, and support to Club teens to help prepare them to move from high school to college graduation.

In addition to celebrations at the various Clubs, representatives from TFS and Boys & Girls Clubs of America held a special check presentation yesterday at the Boys & Girls Club of Fullerton in Fullerton, Calif., to recognize the combined $464,425 contribution.

“We are pleased to join with our auction partners in support of our Diplomas to Degrees partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America,” said Mike Groff, senior vice president, Sales, Product & Marketing, Toyota Financial Services.  “Boys & Girls Clubs of America has been an important partner to Toyota for many years, and we are proud to join with them to make a difference in the lives of youth in communities where we live and work.”

For every vehicle purchased from Nov. 1-30, 2012, TFS pledged a $50 donation and the auction houses pledged an additional $15 to $25 per vehicle.  This marks the second consecutive year TFS and its auction partners have joined together to raise funds for Boys & Girls Clubs of America.  Last year, 17 Clubs shared donations totaling $302,620.

“The generous funding from Toyota and its auction partners enable local Boys & Girls Clubs across the country to continue combating the high school dropout crisis and prepare the millions of teens we serve for college,” said Jim Clark, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of America.  “Toyota’s support goes far beyond the dollar.  From Toyota associates volunteering to serve as mentors, to the abundant efforts led by the auction houses, we have been afforded the means to make a positive and lasting change for today’s young people who hold the future of America in their hands.”
